The celebrated banker, Alistair Blunt, had invited me to his country house in Kent to discuss the mystery of Miss Sainsbury Seal.

She had disappeared on the evening of the day Mr. Morley, her dentist, and my own, had been found

shot dead in his surgery.

A month later, a body had been found in a block of London flats, dressed in her clothes,

the face battered beyond recognition.

But the dental record showed that the corpse was that of Sylvia Chapman,

the wife of an agent in the Secret Service.

And the involvement of the Secret Service suggested that perhaps the intended victim in all this

was Alistair Blunt himself.

The following morning I was up early and I walked out into the garden.

A woman with cropped hair, evidently Blunt's relative Helen Montresor, was talking to the head gardener.

Closer at hand, a young man was digging and delving.
