Hey, Desirving listeners, today's episode is a deep dive on empathy. Empathy is a very important

0:07.4

word for me, not only as a professional and as a professor and as a podcaster, but also

0:14.8

in my personal life. It's a very important word and concept in psychotherapy, of course. It's talked a lot about. It's researched. It's a very important word and concept in psychotherapy, of course.

0:22.4

It's talked a lot about.

0:23.6

It's researched.

0:24.9

It's taught to students as a central feature of effective therapy.

0:30.3

It's talked a lot about in the lay public.

0:34.6

And it's an important thing.

0:36.8

It's an important thing in one's marriage or in one's

0:40.0

friendships at work with your children, with your parents, with other communities of people

0:49.1

1:25.6

background in psychology. I had been to therapy a little bit, but I didn't know

1:31.9

much about psychology. And I realized that I was different from my classmates because when the

1:38.4

topic of empathy came up, everyone seemed to understand what that was. I did not know. I don't even know if I had ever heard of

1:45.4

the word before. I think it'd be different today because I think the word is used among the lay

1:50.0

public a lot more. But in 1995, I remember thinking it was a novel concept. Maybe I'd heard the word before,

1:56.0
