Summary

Russell gets his tarot reading live on the podcast! The guest this week is Emma Gannon, the the Sunday Times bestselling author judge for the prestigious 2025 Women's Prize. Between 2016-2023 she hosted Ctrl Alt Delete, one of Britain’s most successful industry podcasts. She is seen as many as the quintessential voice of the millennial generation. Emma and Russell talk about fascinating areas of unlocking creativity, making time for all the things you want to do (can you have it all?) and singing nuns. A breezy brilliant hour of chat for you to enjoy while you’re walking in this glorious sunshine. If you’re reading this when it’s raining then just pretend.  🍽️ Emma’s new novel ‘Table for One’ (which was discussed in the podcast) has just come out, and you can get that from all the best independent book places. You could go to a local bookshop, or just click here and order it now! 🍽️ ⌨️ Emma’s hugely popular Substack newsletter ‘The Hyphen’ is a weekly dose of everything fascinating in Emma’s life and you can check that out here. ⌨️ ✨ And if you’re finding that this is one of your regular podcast listens, then it makes sense to subscribe to our Patreon; not only do you get it without adverts, you also get an extra show with our guest where you, the listeners, set the questions. It’s a lot of fun.  Also it’s only the price of one packet sandwich a month. Click here to find out more. ✨ And with that, our unstoppable force meets the immovable object of the end of this week’s descriptions. What fun we had. The first paragraph was a trip, then we moved through some factual information, and ended up here at a sort of dribbling arse-end of a sign-off. Next week will be better, I promise you that. Something epic. See you here at the end, again, next time, for a real little treat for you my curious little blurb reader.  TTFN Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In the studio today is a writer and podcaster whose words of wisdom are seen by many people

0:14.8

as a Bible for living in millennial Britain.

It's Emma Gannon, and these are a five brilliant things.

Emma, thank you so much coming on the show. Thank you so much. I love the colour straight

away. I love that jacket. Well, I feel like this is the vibe of the show, isn't it?

0:36.5

Are you getting a lot of compliments for that today? It's a beautiful sort of summary day in London. And that, that, is it a coat? It's sort of like a light jacket, I would say. Maybe my grandma would have worn us, but, um. But she'd have been a funky grandma, but, you know, because that's bursting full of, that just feels like, that's your ideal head you're wearing I reckon I think also I'm going to wear this sort of stuff till I'm old so I just keep going basically but yeah it's like a spring day in London things are blooming blue sky and also everyone on the tube I do notice wears grey and stand out, but I don't mind. I think there's a thing in Scandinavia, I always get it wrong, but it's like the Lord of Junta. And the whole idea of it is that you wear, you know, quite neutral beige clothes so that you don't kind of stand out in any way. I hate that. I kind of love it.

1:27.9

I really like the way Billy Conley dresses.

1:30.5

It's kind of like big, bright colours like that.

1:33.5

The thing is, most people around me do wear that sort of blending in clothes,

1:37.4

which I think can look really chic, like a black blazer or like a neutral colour.

1:42.2

And I wonder, like, what a therapist would say about like needing

1:45.6

to be seen I know I feel like I do want to be like I'm here you know let's have fun and we were

1:51.6

talking off air that you found this quite an interesting exercise to try and put together what are the

1:57.0

the things I love yeah so what is the first? The first thing is my tarot cards.

2:04.1

Okay. I've actually brought them with me by the way if you want to see them. But basically

2:08.1

they are, this is a rainbow set which was recommended by a friend. So I went on a writer's retreat

2:15.5

in October last year. Whereabouts? In Cornwall. Nice there were like 10 of us. And it was just like some writers

2:21.8

talking, you know, bonding and chatting and getting to know each other. And we were all meant

2:27.2

to bring a thing and do a little, you know, workshop. And anyway, someone did a tarot workshop.

2:32.0

And I was just obsessed. Loved it.

2:35.9

And were you into tarot before that?
