Welcome to Nobody Told Me. I'm Jan Black. And I'm Laura Owens. It's an honor to welcome our guest, Elizabeth Smart, to the show today. As you're probably aware, in 2002,

when she was just 14 years old, Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped at knife point by a pedophile

from her home in Utah. Elizabeth endured nine months of being shackled, raped, starved, and threatened

by her kidnappers, Brian David Mitchell and his wife,

Wanda Barzzi, before she was rescued and reunited with her family. Elizabeth, we thank you so

much for joining us. Thank you so much for having me. Your first book, My Story, was a New York

Times bestseller, and now you've written a second book called Where There's Hope.

Tell us why you decided to write the latest book and what's behind the title, Where There's Hope.

Well, it's funny because every time I say that I'm not going to do something that generally ends up being exactly what I end up doing.

So after my first book was done, I thought that was it.

It was over. It was done. I'd written a book, no more.

And I became very involved in advocacy.

I was very involved in public speaking and still am.

And as I was going out and speaking, I would do a lot of question and answers.

And I kept getting asked a lot of the same questions over and over and over.

And they were never the nitty-gritty detailed questions that you might expect being asked about being kidnapped.

It was more, it was bigger.

It was broader questions like, how do you deal with anger and how do you deal with pain?

And have you, do you believe in forgiveness?

Do you believe in God?

It was just these much bigger, broader questions, and I

was getting asked them so frequently, it started to make me think, I don't know if people are
