Summary

Kerry casts light on the story of Elijah using knowledge of the Canaanite pantheon. He also explores what we can learn for our own lives from the real meaning of Elijah's question about how long we will limp between two opinions. There are very real applications for our lives.

Hello and welcome to the Scriptures A Real Podcast, a podcast, a podcast where we talk about elements of the scriptures that have helped them become more real to us because that can help us

0:21.0

draw more power out of them and we need that power. I'm your host, Kerry Mielstein, and today we're

0:25.4

going to talk about Elijah, the famous contest with the priest of Baal and a few other things

0:29.7

and some elements that have made this become very real to me and that held a couple of ideas that I think

0:34.7

are crux for understanding the Bible and understanding ourselves

0:37.8

and our modern day. Let's jump in. If you remember, our last podcast ended with the idea that

0:44.9

Ahab and his wicked wife, Jezebel, were fostering the worship of Baal. And this had become so strong

0:52.8

among the House of Israel that Elijah really was sent to do something

0:55.9

about this. So Elijah or his name is Eliyahu, which means Jehovah is my God and there's something

1:03.2

really significant about that. He comes from the area of Gilead. So this is in the area where the

1:09.8

tribes control the region on the eastern side of the area of Gilead. So this is in the area where the tribes control the region on the eastern

1:14.1

side of the River Jordan and modern day Jordan among a lot of hills over there. And he is going to be

1:22.0

one of the most prototypical prophets ever. When people think of great Old Testament prophets, he's one of the ones

1:29.4

that they will think of. He's the last of what we'd call the non-writing prophets. So we're going to

1:35.1

get prophets soon after this, like Amos and Jonah and so on, Isaiah that write. But I don't even know if Elijah is literate. He certainly can speak

1:48.8

powerfully, but he doesn't write. And so we just have stories about him. Or if he did write,

1:54.7

we don't have any record of it. But it seems like that that wasn't a tradition yet. He also

1:58.8

will become the kind of prophet that people look to as a prophet.

2:02.3

So you have a few prophets that people really think if you've got Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Isaiah,

2:08.1

those are like the great prophets, right? But Elijah is going to come kind of from this wilderness

2:15.2

area with this wilderness look. He's going to wear a mantle.

2:18.4

We've actually seen a mantle and prophets before this, but this is when it becomes really,
