Good morning and welcome to episode 718 of Effectively Wild, the Daily Podcast from

0:25.6

Baseball Prospectus presented by the Plane Decks at BaseballReference.com. I'm Ben Limberg of

0:31.0

Grandland joined by Sam Miller at Baseball Prospectus. Hello. Howdy. How are you? The same.

0:38.2

Okay, so we're going to do an email show today. We've had a bit of an irregular schedule lately. There's

0:45.0

one week left in Stompers season and it's unclear how that will affect the podcast because we'll be

0:51.8

busy book writing after that but at least we'll be home. Not at Baseball Games every day which will

0:57.1

maybe make our recording more predictable. So thanks for bearing with us this long. Anything you'd

1:03.4

like to discuss? No, thank you. Okay, so we're going to get to emails in a second. I will just bring

1:09.9

up the Jack Peterson story. Do you see the Jack Peterson story? He was benched despite having a 413

1:18.0

on base percentage in August. He's not hitting. He's had 41 at bats. He's struck out in 17 of them

1:28.6

and he's had hits in two of them but he's walked 20 times. So he has a 122 413 293 line in August.

1:40.3

Which translates to an above average offensive number just using WRC plus from Vangress where 100

1:50.7

is the average. Jack Peterson has a 117 WRC plus in August because of all those walks and all that

1:57.6

on base percentage. And yet he has not been hitting the ball. He clearly has not lost his

2:05.2

plate discipline entirely but he's not looking as good as he did for most of the season. So he has been

2:11.2

benched and replaced by Kike Hernandez. He has hit very well all season. 327 389 551. Obviously not the

2:22.3

prospect or player that Jack Peterson is but he's been pretty consistently good all year and he's

2:28.3

been playing second base. Filling in for how he Kendrick and with Kendrick coming back and chase

2:33.9

up Lee coming to LA. Mattingly prefers to have his bat rather than Jack Peterson. So we've seen

2:42.0

a player who was probably the rookie of the year favorite one of the best players in baseball in

2:48.3

the first half get benched despite that month where he has a 413 on base percentage. I don't know

2:55.3

that I would make this move. Yeah. I mean you I don't know that you would make this move even if
