Durgavati Devi, born on 7th of October, 1907, who is this woman?

She was a revolutionary and became one of the most meticulous planners for the revolutionaries

of that time.

She became Durgabhai for many members of revolutionary groups, her husband, who also belonged to one

of the revolutionary groups, thought her bomb-making and how to use weapons or firearms.

A fiery woman, she was the woman who put a Tillakan Bhagat Singh when he vowed to overthrow

British rule during a forum of revolutionaries in 1926.

In December, 1928, after British police officer John Saunders was assassinated by Bhagat Singh

and Raj Guru, Sukadev asked her to help Bhagat Singh and Raj Guru escape the scene.

They say that there were over 300 policemen at Lahore railway station looking for Bhagat

Singh and Raj Guru, but she took her infant son with her to the station disguised herself

with Bhagat Singh as her husband and walked through as a couple with Raj Guru as a domestic

help, took a train to Calcutta and escaped the police net.

Later when Bhagat Singh was arrested, she sold her ornaments in a bid to free Bhagat Singh

and others who were arrested.

In October 1930, Bhagat Singh, Sukadev and Raj Guru were sentenced to death.

In a last ditch attempt to free them, Durgawati Devi fired at a police officer and escaped.

She was arrested in 1932 and sent to jail for three years.

This heroic woman passed away in 1999, unknown to most people, unrecognized for her role

in the freedom struggle, a hero of unparalleled courage and skill.

It is time we revive her memory.

It is time she is enshrined in the memory of the young Indians of today.
