so that you may be able to prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

It was C.S. Lewis who said,

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, wait. What? You two? I thought I was the only one. I distinctly remember hanging up the phone after our very first conversation thinking just that to myself. I wondered if I had just met a lifelong friend. I had. We were. At the time,

David Dunham and I were both still in our 20s, still living and working in our beloved homeland, Texas. Over time, we would move with our wives and children hither and yon,

but through our 30s, 40s, and into our 50s, we somehow managed to work on a myriad

of projects together. We founded schools and ministries together, published books together, politic together, played

together, worship together, traveled together, watched our babies grow up together, vacation

together, dreamed together, laughed together, grieved together.

We celebrated together with our families around us. We even sang and sometimes whistled

together. Today, he knows the fullness of glory while the rest of us still peer through a glass

darkly, but someday soon, someday very soon, we'll share eternity together.

The great naturalist Ansel Adams once wrote, friendship can take different turns through

life's coursings and seasons. It can run like a river quietly and sustainingly.

It can erupt like a geyser forcefully and intermittently.

It can rest patiently, awaiting an unseen destiny like an end-deluvian spring.

Or it can explode like a meteor altering the atmosphere so that

nothing ever looks or feels or functions the same again. Over the years, over the decades,

our friendship took each of those turns.

But whatever the coursings our lives may have taken, of this I was certain.
