This is CBS, Iron the World. I'm John Bachelor with Gordon Chang at Gordon G. Chang,

and we're very pleased to welcome General Blaine Holt, U.S. Air Force retired,

having served at NATO and various Air Force deployments, very familiar with the phenomenon

of what you see and what you don't see in the sky.

I begin with a story, not about drones, but about Martians.

Mr. Veeve, 1938, CBS Radio.

A young man named Wells and his crew, the Mercury Theater on the air. This is derivative of the

Federal Theater at the time. You remember, this is the depths of the Second Depression. Most

actors and stage performers were out of work. You found it where you could and you performed the best

you can. Wells was a very young man, and he performed with his crew, the names who were Legion at the time,

lost to us now, and the whole operation was produced by John Hausman, the very famous actor.

The War of the Worlds, speeded up, so much so that we went from New York,

worried about reports from New Jersey, to an

interview with an astronomer, Princeton University, instantly, better than you can do in Zoom.

That was not the technology in 1938, and yet the legend is that it was believed and that people

armed themselves and roamed around their neighborhoods looking for Martian

craft and they were very worried and there was a traffic jam going into Princeton to see the

phenomenon. That was then, 1938. And I remind you all that the war was imminent. The conduct of

the Hitlerites was as aggressive as we remember it, and the anxiety

throughout Europe was palpable. It also extended to here because no more wars. We didn't

want to get involved, and there was a loud, loud concern in America that we were going to

have more wasted lives, like for World War I.
