Summary

Across the globe and through the ages, dragons lurk in our myths and dreams, haunting us as primal forces of terror and transformation. Found in almost every culture, these creatures are potent symbols of the instinctive unconscious, embodying both the dangers of the natural world and the depths of our psyche. In Western mythology, they emerge as fearsome enemies, threatening to drag us back into chaos. 0:27.0	I'm Deborah Stewart, a youngian analyst on Cape Cod. Today we are going to talk about a topic that to our astonishment we have never addressed before.
0:46.2	And the name of this topic is Dragons.
0:50.5	And thank you very much to the listener who wrote in and said,
0:54.5	how come you haven't ever discussed this?
0:57.5	So Dragons, as it turns out, are universal products of mythology, the
1:06.2	imaginal unconscious.
1:09.2	There are dragon stories, dragon images, dragon myths on all continents except Antarctica, and who knows, we may
1:19.1	discover that the penguins have their own dragon mythology somewhere down the line. So here is a major
1:27.2	product of the mythical mind and we will address the questions of how and where dragons are alive inside us.
1:41.6	So this is interesting because the existence of dragons in pretty much every
1:47.4	culture and I'm going to talk a little bit more about that in a second really is perhaps evidence for the existence of the collective
1:57.8	unconscious right so when we talk about the collective unconscious we talk
2:01.7	about this universal substrate that has a tendency to generate similar
2:07.0	images across times and cultures. So if there were ever, you know, an image that kind of fit this category, I think Dragon is it.
2:16.9	So I'm thinking of this book called An Instinct for Dragons by an anthropologist named David
2:22.4	E. Jones Jones and he says there are dragons in every
2:26.3	culture including the innuets who've never seen a reptile yeah and and so why and his by the way, I just think it's really interesting, is that dragons represent an amalgam of the principal predators of ancestral humans.
