Summary

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Mark D'Esposito, M.D., a neurologist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. We discuss the brain mechanisms underlying cognition and the forms of memory required for focus, productivity, planning and achieving goals, and learning. We discuss neurochemicals such as dopamine and acetylcholine and how they can be leveraged to improve cognitive functioning. We also discuss concussion, traumatic brain injury (TBI), Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease, and ways to restore or slow cognitive decline by using pharmacologic, lifestyle and behavioral protocols. This episode provides a modern understanding of cognition and memory and actionable tools to optimize brain health and function. Dr. Mark Desposito is a neurologist and a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the

0:24.8

University of California Berkeley. He is a world expert in the brain mechanisms

0:29.2

controlling executive function and memory. Executive function is the way in which we are able to designate and

0:36.2

carry out specific cognitive strategies and it is fundamental to every aspect of our

0:41.3

daily lives and because so much of being effective in daily life

0:45.2

involves using specific context relevant batches of information in order to understand

0:50.7

what to do and when and what not to do and when and to come up with

0:54.7

strategies that are very adaptive for us to move forward in the context of

0:58.4

relationships, work, school and athletics and on and on, there's really no separation between executive function and memory.

1:06.5

And today, Dr. Desposito explains the neural circuits controlling executive function and memory

1:11.3

how they interact, the key role of dopamine in function and

1:15.0

teaches us ways to optimize in executive function

1:16.0

and something called working memory

1:18.0

and teaches us ways to optimize executive function

1:21.0

and memory, that is how to optimize cognitive function.

1:25.3

In addition to discussing how to optimize cognitive function in the healthy brain, today's

1:29.5

discussion also centers around how to restore cognitive function in disease or injury

1:34.4

conditions that deplete executive function in memory such as traumatic brain

1:38.6

injury, concussion, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and attention deficit disorders.
