Summary

Legendary sports sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards has been working with Colin Kaepernick and speaking in locker rooms around the country. We speak with him about the recent elections and the challenges as well as the opportunities it creates for this new generation of athlete-activists. We also ask Dr. Edwards what inspiration can be drawn from the life of his old friend Muhammad Ali. In addition, I have some choice words about critics of Colin Kaepernick's decision not to vote, we have an extended just stand up award section for every athlete already standing up to Trump and we take calls about how folks are dealing with the altered political landscape.Full notes at http://www.edgeofsportspodcast.com—http://twitter.com/edgeofsports | http://fb.com/edgeofsportspod | email us: edgeofsports@slate.com | Edge of Sports hotline: 401-428-3343 (EDGE) Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

And I can't think of anybody better to talk to about this subject than legendary sports sociologist, Dr. Harry Edwards.

0:44.5

Well, I'm neither surprised nor chagrin that the outcome, the media, especially mainstream media in this country, did not expose Trump because they never attacked him straight on

0:54.5

They gave him free time, billions of dollars in free time.

0:58.5

They didn't expose him.

1:00.1

They showcased him.

1:02.0

And then when I look at what was happening in American society,

1:06.0

with black men, women, and children being shot down by police officers

1:10.5

and nobody going to jail.

1:12.0

When I look and see an Oscar Grant who is killed while he's on his stomach with two cops on him,

1:17.3

and he's shot, and the guy that shot him gets less time than Michael Big got for murdering much.

1:23.3

I, you know, I never deluded myself into thinking that somehow we were in some post-racial America.

1:29.8

I looked at the way that they treated the first African-American president and his family.

1:33.6

And so I was not shocked or chagrin.

1:37.1

The issue now, for me, is what do we do about it?

1:40.6

And at one level, it's crystal clear that this situation can no longer be denied,

1:45.7

and we have to go to work. Now, I agree with everything you just said. Racism, of course,

1:52.3

animated this election, the horrific dereliction of duty by the media animated this election.
