Summary

Rapha presents Life the Peloton Are the best pro cyclists simply born that way - if so, is it Mum or Dad whose genetics have the biggest impact? What would happen to riders if Grand Tours were six weeks long? Dr Andre La Gerche is a sports cardiologist whose work with top athletes - including many pro cyclists, gives us answers to these questions.  I talked to Dr La Gerche here in Melbourne for the latest episode of the pod and got to ask the important questions about the heart and performance, as well as, for good measure, clarifying his position on choosing training or beers (never both!)  ... Theme Music The theme music for Life in the Peloton was composed by Pete Shelley, who was lead singer of the punk band Buzzcocks. It was commissioned by the production company behind Channel 4’s coverage of the Tour de France in the 1980s and was used as the theme music for the nightly highlights show. Pete died in December 2018. We were given permission by Pete’s widow and his manager to continue using the music for the theme tune to Life in the Peloton. To hear more about the music, listen to the Andre Greipel episode of Life in the Peloton. Welcome, everyone, welcome everyone, welcome, everyone. Welcome again. This is Life and the Peloton. Thanks to Raffer. I'm Mitch

0:28.4

Docker. We've got a great episode coming up for you. Andre LaGersh. I mentioned him in the last

0:33.5

episode. But Raffer, you've heard me say before, what makes them so good you're wondering?

0:38.3

Is it the kit? Is it the quality of the kit? Is it the design of the kit? Or is it this

0:43.0

culture they're trying to create, this feeling, this love for cycling? I sat down with one

0:48.8

of the designers, Nikki Hodge, and I asked him this question, what are you trying to do when

0:53.5

you're designing these kits? What is the main focus? What are you actually trying to achieve to get that design onto the kit? I think it was like you said in your previous podcast when you talked about Locky stuff, like trying to take stuff from outside the world of cycling, you know, that's what we're trying to find, whether it's culture, art, music, whatever it may be, try

1:11.5

and not, you know, broaden the horizons.

1:13.9

Broaden the horizon. I love that. They're trying to look outside of the world of cycling and

1:19.2

bring it back in. Bring that culture, that feeling that we love in our normal day life,

1:24.1

and bring it back in and put it on kits. It's awesome. I love it. Now to today's episode.

1:30.3

Are the best pro cyclists simply born that way? If so, is it mum or dad that give us those

1:35.7

jeans? What would happen if we raced grand tours for six weeks long? Dr. Andre de LaGersh is a sports

1:42.8

cardiologist who's worked with top athletes. Lots of

1:46.2

pro cyclists, including myself. And he's going to give us the answers to these questions.

1:50.5

I spoke with him last week in Melbourne. I sat down with him and I asked him important questions

1:55.4

about hearts and performances. As you know, we have to get these heart checks as a pro cyclist, a world tour cyclist, these obligatory UCI heart checks every year.

2:05.6

So I asked him all about that. Why are we getting these? What's the purpose of this?

2:09.6

And also, I asked him the elusive question, his position on training and beers, or alcohol.

2:16.6

That question we really don't want to know the answer to really,

2:20.1

but we get into that. We find out all that and what is happening with the tickers inside of us

2:24.8

as pro athletes, post-pro athletes, and also your everyday Joe Blow. So guys, sit back and listen
