Summary
Originally broadcast on February 12th 2020, this episode feels like a dream or a fantasy world away now - but it’s a brilliant one which deserves the DPP Rewind treatment at a poignant time. Michael Cashman was a delight and his story is thrilling, which absolutely warrants its re-run - please listen if you haven’t yet, and if you did at the time, why not revisit…
Just to note the films Pip lists up top on the intro, here they are:
Victim • 120bpm • Tangerine • Ammonite • A Special Day • Beach Rats • God’s Own Country • Portrait Of A Lady On Fire
Below is the original writeup from Feb 2020…

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 311 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by activist, author and actor (all the A’s), Michael Cashman! Sorry - let me correct that - Baron Cashman CBE!
An amazing meeting this week with Pip and Michael, a man whose experience and knowledge will come shining through immediately upon listening. As a founder of Stonewall (with Ian McKellen), ex-member of European Parliament, activist and former actor (those of us who grew up on Eastenders will remember him as Colin), his life has been a genuine document of ups and downs, highs and lows, but all navigated with love, conviction and positivity. His story is moving, uplifting and at times incredibly unfair, but as you will hear - from all of this, pure goodness has been his reward. Over 30 years of his journey has been underpinned by long term partner Paul, who is unfortunately no longer with us but as you’ll hear, is spoken of by Michael with such love and compassion and it’s pretty much impossible to not be stirred by - well, the whole conversation, let’s be frank. The rest is yours to discover - listen, learn, and become better acquainted with a strong force for good in the world. Welcome, Michael!
His book 'One Of Them' is available now on Bloomsbury!

| 0:09.0 | as it's Pride Month, I wanted to to reissue a podcast that in my mind was like two, three years ago, |
| 0:15.8 | but it's because of the last year that we've had it. I only actually came out in February of last |
| 0:20.2 | year, but it was a chat I had with Michael Cashman and it just blew me away. And Pride Month and the |
| 0:28.8 | Pride parades are all to do with Stonewall, which Michael was a key part of and he tells his story |
| 0:36.7 | and it's it's glorious. So yeah, I wanted to just sling this one back up on your feed, but while |
| 0:42.2 | I'm here, I also wanted to give you a bit of of Pride Month viewing recommendations in an |
| 0:52.7 | upcoming episode I return on Brett Goldstein's films to be buried with. I talk a little bit about |
| 0:58.7 | the reason, or I think one of their reasons there's so much amazing, gay cinema. And I won't go |
| 1:07.1 | into that now because we go into it into the episode and it was an interesting realization, but |
| 1:12.0 | I wanted to give you a few things to watch. So get a pen and paper out or as this is in the intro, |
| 1:18.0 | it should be easy to come back and find. The first one is a British film called Victim. It's fantastic. |
| 1:24.9 | I'm going to jump around the countries. I'm then going to go with a French film called 120 BPM, |
| 1:31.5 | which if you enjoyed it's a sin recently. It's a similar era but in over in France at that time. |
| 1:39.8 | Let's jump over to America for Tangerine. Tangerine is amazing and it was all shot on iPhones, |
| 1:48.0 | but you can't tell at all. It's a genuine. It's a work of art. So I think you'll enjoy that. Let's |
| 1:53.8 | head back to the UK and let's go for Ammonite. Now, Ammonite, you might actually be able to catch |
| 1:59.0 | in some cinema still. It's led by Kate Winslet, who obviously everyone is mad about at the moment, |
| 2:06.9 | rightfully so because of Mayor of Eastbound and downtown. Let's go back to... |
| 2:14.0 | Have we gone to Italy? Let's go to Italy for a special day. So feel a run in a wonderful, |
| 2:20.1 | wonderful film that all takes place in one apartment building as such on a special day. Let's go |
| 2:28.8 | back to America for beach rats, also setting Brooklyn in the Brooklyn gay scene. I guess rent |
