In 2004, 21-year-old Louise Ogborn was working her shift at a McDonald’s in Mount Washington, Kentucky when her life was turned upside down. A man claiming to be a police officer called the restaurant and accused Louise of theft. What followed was a horrifying two-and-a-half-hour ordeal, during which Louise was strip searched and manipulated—right in the manager’s office—all under the instruction of the voice on the phone.

This disturbing case, recently highlighted in the Netflix docuseries Don’t Pick Up the Phone, exposes how far blind obedience to authority can go—and the devastating consequences of a scam taken to the extreme.
