Summary

EPISODE 133 - DOMHNALL GLEESON - Actor

Team Deakins has a great time speaking with actor, Domhnall Gleeson (STAR WARS, NEVER LET ME GO, THE REVENANT). He tells us how his father being an actor (Brandon Gleeson) showed him it was a career that could be done, with hard work. He shares that a well-run set is his favorite place to be and the feeling of loss when a film doesn’t land. We talk about his experience of working with the Coen Brothers in the film, True Grit as well as working on the film, Ex Machina, and with Alicia Vikander. We reminisce about the experience of working together on the film, Unbroken, including his having to starve for the start of the movie. He also shares what he has learned, like not having to be in pain to get a good performance and relating with the crew as an actor. And lots, lots more! You won’t want to miss this episode!

Let's start with how did you get to where you are today? What was your past? Did you always

know you wanted to act or did you do something else and then find it along the way?

So I grew, I'm from Dublin in Ireland. My, I guess the quick way to start the stories

1:45.1

is to say that my father is an actor, a really good actor, called Brandon Gleason. He was

a teacher until he was 34, a full-time teacher. When I was a young kid, he was a teacher but

he was doing a lot of plays and that sort of stuff. Then he decided to go full-time. He

had four kids in the 80s. It was not a good time to go full-time. I think he was about to

give up a full-time job. It was a bit nuts to give up being a teacher. But he loved it and

he thought he had something and my mother, I think, basically said if you want to do it, you should
