When we train dogs with layered shaping, we train with out of the box thinking. In this episode, I’m giving a glimpse of what that looks like and how it relates to the transfer of value. It starts with knowing what a dog loves most of all. I’m also covering a case study on how we used the transfer of reinforcement value for a German Shepherd so that they could learn to retrieve without a force fetch.

In the episode you'll hear:

• What we need our dog to understand about reinforcement and what we need to understand.
• A review of the reinforcement process in our dog training.
• Why your dog's age, the location you are training, and what you are training matter.
• The importance of your placement and delivery of reinforcement.
• How we found something that a German Shepherd loved and used it for training.
• The process of transferring the value from bubbles to food with a target stick.
• Why we need to change a dog’s physiology for training.
• How ping-ponging reinforcements help with the transfer of value.
• That there’s not a linear path for all dogs, so we think outside the box.
• About our brand new free DoggyFlix video streaming adventure for dog people.

Over the last few weeks, I have been rolling out a series that kind of grew organically

0:05.4

from your questions all about the methodology of how I train my dogs, how I come up with

0:11.6

the lesson plans for my students. And often it's, how do you train this without a lure,

0:16.8

Susan? It could be something as simple like, how do you teach healing without a food lure?

0:21.3

Or how do you teach your dog to point his back leg with or without a food lure?

0:25.9

Or how could you shape your dog to retrieve?

0:29.8

And my answer to that really requires some out-of-the-box thinking.

0:34.5

And tonight, I'm going to do a deep dive and give you a glimpse of

0:38.9

what that looks like.

0:40.1

I'm Susan Garrett.

0:51.4

Welcome to shape my dog.

0:52.7

In a podcast last week, I mentioned a German

0:56.4

shepherd that I was teaching in Atlanta. And this was at least or more than 20 years ago. I was giving

1:01.9

a seminar. This woman showed up right at the beginning of the day. She said, this is my dog.

1:07.3

Let's call her Bella. Honestly, my memory is not that good that I can remember either the woman's name or the dog's name. She said, I need to teach Bella how to retrieve the dumbbell

1:15.4

for obedience. And my instructor said that they would like to do a force fetch, which means

1:21.8

they were going to earpinch the dog until the dog opened its mouth, then they would put the

1:26.6

dumbbell in. And that's called

1:28.7

negative reinforcement. They remove the pain when the dog does what they want. You guys don't

1:34.5

really need to know that. If you are listening to this podcast, you probably don't ever want to

1:37.9

cause your dog pain. But this was what was going to be Bella's fate if I couldn't help

1:43.8

this woman somehow do that behavior.
