If you spend time on social media, you will have seen videos where somebody has a family dog and a young toddler or a baby in very precarious situations. It’s unnecessarily dangerous as the dog is giving clear information with their body language on how they are feeling! If we live with a dog, we need to understand how they communicate their emotions. We’re covering what to look for in canine body language, so you know what dogs are telling you.

In the episode you'll hear:

• My observations on what an adult Australian Shepherd is saying about interactions with a puppy.
• That a play bow does not always mean a dog wants to play.
• What your dog is trying to communicate to you and what to observe.
• How our dogs have complex emotions and how they tell us what they are feeling.
• Four books about canine body language to have in your library.
• How to really notice what your dog’s tail is telling you, including a left wag.
• About the way dogs use their eyes to express their emotional state.
• How dogs use body language to try and diffuse situations.
• Why to notice what your dog’s tongue is doing and what a dog’s yawn could be saying.
• The signals to look for in your dog’s ears, head posture, and body.

If you spend any time on social media, chances are you will have seen a video where somebody

0:05.9

has a family pet and a young toddler or a baby in very precarious situations. And honestly,

0:14.0

it makes me turn away and gives me a pain in my stomach because it's unnecessarily dangerous and the dog is giving them clear, clear

0:25.7

information with their body language on what they're feeling at that moment. And so I decided

0:31.8

we needed a podcast on that dog and your dog's body language. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. What I'm going to do right now is I'm

0:51.4

going to roll a video of an 11 week old Australian

0:55.6

Shepherd puppy and a three and a half year old Australian Shepherd adult.

1:02.0

Now, a student of mine owns both of these dogs and when he and his wife are going to come

1:06.0

for the lesson, I said, what's up this week?

1:08.4

What's keeping you awake at night with your puppy?

1:10.8

And he said, she really is acting week? What's keeping you awake at night with your puppy? And he said,

1:11.6

she really is acting inappropriately to our adult dog bling. And I said, well, bring bling along.

1:17.7

And so those of you listening to this podcast, as you can guess, it's about body language.

1:22.7

So at some point, I'd strongly encourage you to jump over here to YouTube and watch this episode. However,

1:29.7

I think it's an episode that you really will get value from from just listening to as well

1:35.6

so you can start to visualize what I'm talking about in your dog's body language.

1:41.8

Now, with the clip that I just rolled between those two Ozys,

1:44.8

I will put it in slow motion at the end of today's podcast because I want you to have a look

1:51.3

and see what I saw. The body language was super clear from that adult dog, but unfortunately,

1:56.7

most people would look at them and go, oh, look at that. It's so cool. Why would they think

2:01.9

that? Because in a 50-second period of time, that adult dog went into what appeared to be a playbough

2:10.3

15 times. Heck, I saw 15 playbows in 50 seconds, Susan. Clearly, that adult dog is saying, yeah, game on.
