0:12.1	Right now we're going through the first book of the Bible,
0:14.3	Genesis. A few months back I was with my extended family and as it happens with extended
0:20.8	family we ended up in a lively debate. I'm sure you've
0:23.9	taken part in one of these before. I've had my fair share of debates about
0:27.5	politics, social events, and current world news, but this one was about the
0:32.2	Bible. Someone had asserted that they thought the Bible
0:35.5	should start with the New Testament, and it devolved into multiple members agreeing that
0:40.0	it made more sense because the New Testament was the more substantial part of the Bible.
0:44.8	Like if someone was just going to read a little bit of the Bible, they should start with a gospel
0:49.0	so they didn't miss out on the important parts.
0:52.1	And this debate ended with a family member saying,
0:54.8	you don't need the Old Testament for salvation, you just need Jesus.
0:58.4	You need to believe he died for you.
1:00.3	That's all you need.
1:02.1	And while I understand the sentiment, I think it misses something big.
1:06.0	But it's not just my family.
1:08.0	Author and pastor, Andy Stanley, came out with a controversial book in 2018 where he proposes that in order for the
1:15.5	modern church to reclaim its place in the world, the Old Testament must be disregarded.
1:21.6	A Gospel Coalition article by Michael J. Krueger explains that Stanley's proposed
1:26.4	approach to reaching more people is to take the focus off the Bible, especially the Old Testament,
