Summary

Is it the shoes? In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg talk golf shoes and the ways that our footwear can influence how we play. From a discussion of metal spikes, to hightops, to shoe fit, to "traditional" versus more modern sporty shoes, it's a wide-ranging discussion of a piece of equipment that probably doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Let's talk golf shoes, guys. Have you ever taken any care in what shoes you wear, apart from what

0:07.1

outfit they go with, either of you, Lou or Greg, Greg, you, have you ever thought about what

0:11.9

golf shoes you wear and if they make a difference? Yeah, I have actually. I, you know, obviously,

0:17.4

as we, you know, I've come through the era where we transitioned out of steel spikes um i mean back in the back in the day we you know when i was a kid we wore shoes and you

0:26.1

had to put oil on the bottom of them and they and they honestly you look back now it was like

0:31.1

wearing two bricks yeah um is what it felt like but nowadays it sounded great on a path though didn't

0:36.3

it that yeah click click click yeah and you had to really look after them. They're very expensive looking and expensive things in those days. But nowadays, you've got so many options. And it's really important to understand, I think, a little bit about what the options do for you. And then the stability piece of them and things like that. I know, I chatted to the shoe people at Tightlist and Footjoy lot. And, you know, they tell you, they're, you know, their blurbs and what the science behind it says. But I tell them what I kind of, I'm working on in my ground force stuff. Once I started doing that, I was like, hey, am I getting the right, am I on the right track here with what I'm wearing? Because some of the shoes I noticed weren't as stable in today. You know, these casual looking ones weren't, for me, didn't feel as stable. 100%. Yeah. So, yeah, I'll change out to conditions. You know, if it's, we play somewhere with a lot of pine needles over in the Carolinas, I'll put spikes in. Really? Really? Metal spikes as in plastic sheet or spikes as in metal spikes. Metal spikes, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, yeah, yeah, because we get off some of these places, you get off in the pine needles, you're slipping everywhere. I've definitely done that. We've got a ban on metal spikes. I can't wear metal spikes. I haven't worn metal spikes.

1:48.6

Well, you are the Gregi. I can do whatever I want. I just go wherever I want. I'll do whatever I want.

1:55.5

Do you like wearing metal spikes? Not really. No. I remember them hurting my feet after you play.

2:05.2

Yeah, honestly, I'll do one pair and then I'll get out of that as quick as I can't.

2:09.9

It does feel like more wear and tear on you.

2:12.8

The evolution of golf shoes in our lifetime has been massive, if you think about what you're

2:18.5

talking about there, what we used to wear the spikes and hurting your feet. Obviously, that was

2:22.2

to do with the soles as well, Lou, just being thin and rubbish and built around like, I mean,

2:27.9

golf shoes were built a little bit around city style shoes, I would call them, you know,

2:32.4

like you're going into the office shoes, but with spikes on the bottom,

2:36.4

because golf has always had this kind of, you know, this kind of, um,

2:40.7

flaps over the laces, Mark?

2:42.4

Yeah, I remember my first pair of shoes had flaps over the laces when I was a kid.

2:47.5

Um, but this like idea of tradition that we have to sometimes be shackled with in golf shoes.

2:52.7

But golf shoes have changed massively.

2:55.5

I mean, there's so many golf shoes now that you would never have been allowed in the UK
