Summary

Have you ever heard that when a baby, or a dog, or basically any animal is twitching, they are dreaming? But what if that twitching occurs in the womb or from a baby mouse whose eyes haven't yet opened? Tony discusses the article "What Are Dreams For" by Amanda Gefter, https://apple.news/ATyOGpIRDQNOHahTKYECH5Q (https://apple.news/ATyOGpIRDQNOHahTKYECH5Q) This episode dives deep into the intricate relationship between dreams and our bodily sensations. Grounded in recent scientific research, we explore how our dreaming minds are influenced by physical signals, including heart rates, vestibular system information, and even muscular sensations. We'll discuss how dreams incorporate snippets of our daily lives and long-forgotten memories, pointing to a complex dialogue between the mind and the body. Additionally, we touch upon the innovative domain of robotics, where principles from dreaming inspire adaptive learning in machines. Join us as we unravel the intricate web of dreams, bodily experiences, and the subtle ways they shape our understanding of reality. Please follow Tony’s newest Instagram account for the Waking Up to Narcissism podcast https://www.instagram.com/wutnpod/ (https://www.instagram.com/wutnpod/) as well as Tony’s account https://www.instagram.com/tonyoverbay_lmft/ (https://www.instagram.com/tonyoverbay_lmft/) To learn more about Tony's upcoming re-release of the Magnetic Marriage course, his Pathback Recovery course, and more, sign up for his newsletter through the link at https://linktr.ee/virtualcouch (https://linktr.ee/virtualcouch)Inside ACT for Anxiety Disorder Course is Open! Hey, everybody.

0:07.3

Welcome to today's episode of The Virtual Couch.

0:09.5

I'm your host, Tony Overbay.

0:10.6

I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist.

0:12.9

And today's episode, if you may notice, I did not say what numbered episode.

0:18.3

And that's a little bit on purpose, some intention behind that,

0:21.6

because this is one of those episodes that I'm not 100% sure when or if it will see the light

0:27.0

of day. Now that sounds like I'm being very dramatic. But in reality, it's just one of these

0:31.3

episodes that I find very interesting. And I don't even necessarily have a direction that I want to go. So I want to see where it will unfold, but it's about dreams. And I don't even necessarily have a direction that I want to go, so I want to see

0:38.5

where it will unfold, but it's about dreams. And so often, people come into my office and

0:44.1

they say, what do you know about dreams? And do you interpret dreams? Do you believe the dreams

0:48.4

that they mean things, or do they not? Are they just random pictures and words and situations?

0:54.0

And being completely honest,

0:55.7

early in my therapeutic practice, I honestly just didn't even spend much time thinking about

1:02.1

other people's dreams. And they would bring them into my office. And it wasn't like I was thinking,

1:06.7

oh, boy, this again, or what a waste of time. But I would just, I would act engaged and I would

1:11.8

listen and say, tell me more, but it didn't necessarily impact the therapy. So I started to

1:19.0

recognize that, okay, well, that's a me issue. It's not very empathetic. So every two years,

1:23.2

therapists have to do some training, some continuing educational units. So I spent a lot of those units one

1:29.0

year on dream training. And I learned a little bit about Freud's interpretation of dreams and

1:34.1

some other theories on dreams. And just this is an oversimplified, probably confabulated memory
