In any criminal investigation where the suspect is not known, the most difficult part is getting the perpetrator identified.

How does law enforcement accomplish identification?

Eyewitness, blood evidence, DNA evidence, video evidence, fingerprint evidence, documentary evidence.

A relatively new and exciting method is investigative genetic genealogy.

And in this science that is complex in itself,

we are seeing so many perpetrators who in the past would have gotten away with their heinous crimes being caught and brought to justice.

And this science, as I said, relatively new is almost, well, scientifically, I shouldn't say

foolproof because many attorneys and lawyers and the criminal justice field, court cases, case law is attempting

to challenge this relatively, I say relatively new science, but it is creating exciting

new possibilities.

And will there be a future where we won't see serial killers or serial rapists because they will get caught so early on in the investigation that they never get to ply their heinous career?

It has to be some common sense. They were the ones who called 911 to get him help, and now they're calling for change.

You know, investigative genetic genealogy, of course, has been credited with catching this monster, the Golden State Killer, who Joseph James DiAngelo, who at one point in his criminal career,

had worked about all things a police officer.

And you look at some of his victims up on the screen.

And he was one of the most heinous criminals that we have seen
