I believe that diversity matters in the outdoors because I really believe in pushing the dominating narrative that only white people go outside and

simultaneously want to acknowledge and need to acknowledge the barriers that do exist.

When I see other people of color spending time outside,

doing exactly what I love, it means people of color understand

how important our role is and to not be afraid to go past

our cultural boundaries around fear and myths surrounding being outdoors.

It's also important for my kids to see that diversity really is everywhere,

not just in cities, not just in school and in parks, but in the wilderness too.

If the faces of our hikers and campers don't reflect the faces of our increasingly

diversifying America, our public lands, parks and trails will certainly suffer. These places exist by the

power and stewardship of their users. So let's grow our community of users and let's diversify our outdoors.

It's extremely important to break down the barriers that prevent minorities from enjoying the

outdoors. Because pretty soon minorities will be the majority and the care and nurturing of the parks will become our responsibility.

I think diversity in the outdoors challenges us to be our best selves as individuals as well as the community.

I share deep admiration and respect for the outside world.
