Dr Jackson Katz, welcome back to I-Way. How are you?

0:15.2

I'm great, Jamila. It's great to be back with you.

0:17.5

Jackson, since the last time we spoke, you and I were talking about men's violence

0:22.5

against women. We were talking about the fact that it was an epidemic. We were talking about a

0:26.2

problem in the language around the way we'd discuss men's violence against women specifically.

0:31.4

It felt like we were at a peak of how hostile the relations were between men and women. And yet in the years since then,

0:42.8

am I overreacting if I say that things feel like they've gotten significantly worse and at

0:49.1

like an unprecedented speed? You know, it's a good question. I think it's complicated. I think there's ways of

0:56.3

looking at the complexities of social change and social interactions such that you can make the case

1:12.4

1:17.5

of just there's been a significant amount of backsliding and backlash towards, you know,

1:24.0

by, frankly, by men towards women's progress.

1:27.9

And I think that there has been an acceleration to a certain extent in the boldness that some

1:34.3

misogynist men, you know, feel towards, you know, expressing some misogynist views,

1:39.6

whether it's online or interpersonally or whatever other way.

1:43.7

But in the flip side is that the reason

1:46.2

for the backlash is that women have made so much progress and men and others. In other words,

1:51.1

in challenging and pushing back against thousands of years of patriarchal subjugation, if you will.

1:58.3

Like the Barbie movie came out, for example, after you and I spoke,

2:01.9

and the Barbie movie got an enormous worldwide energy that it sort of tapped into. And again,
