Jean-Luc Melanchon, leader of the left-wing French party La France Insumise, was recently in New York

City to meet with organizers, political figures, and intellectuals. While he was in town,

I interviewed him in front of a live audience at the N-plus-1 office. La France in Summise, which

means France unbowed or France in revolt,

is perhaps the most successful left-wing political party in the North Atlantic world at a time

of overwhelming far-right ascent. What stood out to me from the conversation is not just the

distance between French political culture and our own here in the U.S., but more importantly, the success that Melanchon's left populism has had alongside and through his internationalist commitments and the anchoring of his movement inside the immigrant neighborhoods that
