Summary

It was a different kind of Independence Day in America where so many people demonstrated for anti America positions, violence broke out and the rest of us sort of muted our enthusiasm.  What's going on here?    A report out of Tucson says four current Pac 12 schools are negotiating with the Big 12 this week to join and make it the Big 16.  We'll tell you which schools want in.    Joey Chestnut not only won the hot dog eating contest this year, he paused to tackle a demonstrator as he was eating.  The emcee would call Chestnut, "a monument to our existence" at the event.  This is so fun and over the top.    And a Major League pitcher walks out of the dugout and onto the field wearing a giant American Flag.  When you find out who it was.... you may like him now.

Quite a mailbag poured in this holiday weekend.

Hope your July started right with a festive fun, safe, and healthy, Fourth of July

0:22.6

Independence Day holiday weekend. It was a long one. And the mail, and much of what I've heard

0:30.0

from so many of you over the last few days was your experience. This weekend was a little bit like

0:33.5

mine. This was a very different kind of Fourth of July. And we knew we were headed for a

0:39.9

violent summer. We've talked about that for quite a while. And there were certainly plenty of that.

We will not be talking much about that or focusing on that here on the podcast. It really isn't,

0:51.7

to me, the main topic, as tragic as some of these things are, we had violence

0:54.8

in Kansas City, violence in Chicago, people are acting crazy, and we don't seem to be doing

1:01.3

much about it. There are warnings everywhere with these people that are going nuts, and we don't

1:05.3

seem to be able to prevent any of it, and I don't have the solution, so we'll not spend a lot

1:10.3

of time on that, but this was a different

1:11.8

kind of Fourth of July. And one consistent theme I got from everybody that I talked to, almost

1:19.2

everywhere I went, or people that send emails, were sharing the same kind of experiences, that

1:25.6

this was all sort of muted or repressed a little

1:30.0

bit, that they didn't see quite as much red, white, and blue or celebration or things that

1:36.6

they would normally see around the 4th of July.

1:39.1

And I'm struggling for the reason why there are various possibilities here that are in play.

1:44.7

The obvious one from my experience in my life is, have we just returned to the Jimmy Carter

1:50.7

days where there was very little patriotism in America?
