Summary

Over the past year, you’ve sent us words you want us to cover on the show. And for months, we let those suggestions pile up into a list of nearly 200 words. Today, we begin to chip away at that lexical mountain. A team of Science Friday producers set out to tackle five listener-suggested words and quiz Johanna about their meaning or origin in a game we’re calling, Diction Dash. Feel free to play along... or just listen to Johanna get all the answers wrong.  We still want your suggestions! If you want us to cover a word on the show, send an email to [email protected]. We’ll add it to the lexical mountain. Guests:  Kathleen Davis is a Producer at Science Friday.  Diana Montano is Events Producer at Science Friday.  Lauren J. Young is a Digital Producer at Science Friday.  Christie Taylor is a Producer at Science Friday.  Alexa Lim is Senior Producer at Science Friday. Credits:  Science Diction is produced by Johanna Mayer and Elah Feder. Elah is also our editor and senior producer. Daniel Peterschmidt is our composer. Robin Palmer helped fact check this episode. Nadja Oertelt is our Chief Content Officer.

Hello. Today, we're going to play a game, and it's called Diction Dash, where you guess the true meaning or origin of a word.

0:09.9

See, for months, you have sent us words that you want us to cover on the show, and for months, we have shamefully ignored them.

0:18.8

And over time, the list has grown to over 200 words, an insurmountable

0:24.1

lexical mountain. And so today, with the help of our friends and coworkers at Science Friday,

0:29.9

we are tackling 2.5% of the beast, aka five words. You're welcome. I'm Johanna Mayer and this is Diction Dash. All right, let's get into it. First up, radio producer Kathleen Davis. Hi, Kathleen. Hi, Johanna. What listener selected word did you choose? So I'm feeling ready for summer.

0:54.9

Me too.

0:56.0

So I'm bringing you a word that will probably elicit some warm weather feelings.

1:00.9

I am here for it.

1:02.6

So are you familiar with the dandelion?

1:06.3

I am very familiar with the dandelion.

1:08.7

Yeah, it's a wildflower.

1:10.4

Just a side note, there are actually a lot

1:12.5

of species of dandelions all over the world, but the ones that we are most familiar with in North

1:17.2

America were actually introduced from Europe, and then they just spread and spread, which they're

1:22.4

very good at doing. So the dandelion has this big yellow flower head.

1:27.9

And then at the end of its life cycle, it turns into a whole bunch of seeds that float away in the wind.

1:33.8

They're white and fuzzy.

1:35.6

And at least for me, an important part of my childhood was blowing those seeds into the wind and spreading weeds into my parents' backyard.

1:45.5

Absolutely. I have very clear memories of doing this. Of course. So if we split up the word

1:50.6

dandelion, there's a part of this word that's a pretty obvious allusion to an animal, right?

1:56.2

The lion part, I'm guessing. Yeah, exactly, exactly. But I want you to guess what the remaining part of this

2:02.2

etymology refers to, so the dandy part. So I have a quick quiz for you. Okay. I want you to guess
