President Biden and President Xi spent two hours on a video phone call.

What did they talk about? Well, senior administration officials described the call as

direct substantive and detailed. Now that's informative, isn't it?

However, when the officials were asked what the two leaders actually talked about,

the White House offered nothing direct, substantive or detailed in response.

But to hear the White House side of it, Mr. Biden spent much of the time talking about the

consequences if Mr. Xi were to provide material aid and equipment to the Russians while they have

forces in Ukraine making war. The White House and State Department wouldn't even say generally

what the red lines are, nor what the consequences would be for China if Xi were to decide to support

Russia's war on Ukraine. For Xi's part, the Chinese government said, quote, China stands for

peace and opposes war. In quote, Xi would not go so far as to criticize Russia and its war

against Ukraine. And US officials said they weren't sure whether China will decide to support Russia

in its brutal war on Ukraine or not. President Biden made no statement after the phone call with Xi,

and there we are, diplomacy, Biden style. The war over the 2020 presidential election, though,
