Summary

On the latest episode of the On a Mission podcast, I’m joined by footballing legend Matt Le Tissier. The former Southampton and England star discusses growing up in Guernsey and his football career in the 90s, as well as recent controversies about opinions he's expressed online.

Matt opens up on the abuse he's received for his views on the current state of the world and emphasises his belief in free speech and why he is standing firm against bullying tactics when it comes to his beliefs.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Sometimes we find a place in life that feels so comfortable and content, that we prefer to remain there instead of chasing the next dream.
  • We are often told that self-belief, when it comes to our talents, is somehow arrogant. But if we believe in the skills we have, then we should always proclaim them, and know our own value.
  • There are bound to be conflicting schools of thought in the world, but how we enforce our own beliefs is what sets us apart from the bullying tactics employed by some, who wish to enforce their singular views upon society.
  • The government allowed pharmaceutical companies to have a free run when it came to vaccines, racking up huge profits, but not being held accountable for any damage that has occurred. This is a huge betrayal of the public's trust.

BEST MOMENTS

'I had values instilled in me by my parents, which have served me throughout my life'

'I wanted to show off. I wanted people to see what I could do with a football that other people couldn't do'

'We're taught as kids never to give into bullies, and that's what I believe the people who are trying to shut me up, are'

'If there's no long term safety data behind these vaccinations, why would you try to force it onto the population?'

but I'm going to be honest, this interview has got me a lot of kudos with my dad and husbands

and family. No problem at all. So let's start at the beginning then because I believe you grew up

0:13.9

in Guernsey. My hubby's family are from the Isle of Man, which I believe has got a population

0:21.2

of about 80,000, so I think probably about 20,000 more than Guernsey. What was it like growing up on

0:27.1

the island? I loved it. To be honest, I think it was just a really chilled out place, very safe

0:38.4

place to grow up and I loved my childhood there, just was filled with playing sport pretty much

0:46.5

apart from school getting in the way a little bit. But yeah, my entire life growing up with three older

0:52.3

boys, three older brothers who were all sport mad as well. And so yeah, I just had my first 16

1:00.7

years, my life was dominated by football, cricket, tennis, table tennis, snooker, hockey, you name it.

1:11.2

And if it was a round ball, I played it. And so yeah, school got in the way a little bit at times.

1:18.9

But I just, I loved my, my childhood in Guernsey. It was fantastic.

1:24.4

And I believe your brothers were all quite talented. One in particular, you see quite openly,

1:29.7

as equally as talented as you, and perhaps under different circumstances, if you were

1:34.6

drop in the mainland, you could have all had professional careers.

1:38.2

Yeah, and I really believe that's true. My oldest brother, Mark, who was the only defender out of

1:42.8

the four of us. I think even he, as a defender, was still very good. And I think would have been good

1:50.1

enough to have been a professional. But I would say my other two brothers, who were more,

1:56.1

one was midfielder, one was a forward. I would say both of them were equally as talented as I was.

2:01.4

And if we'd have been brought up as a family on the mainland, 100% those two were good enough to

2:08.0

be professional footballers. Wow. And I believe it was because certainly with two of your brothers,

2:14.1

well, I think all three actually, they, they were so comfortable on the island. It was such a lovely

2:19.5

way of life that they didn't really at that time want to leave the family, perhaps, would you
