What happens when a police department has so many problems that the best solution

is simply to scrap it and start again? Traditionally in police departments they have this motto,

better to end up in front of 12 and carried by six. That is a warrior mentality.

Defund the police has become a clarion call for Black Lives Matter protesters across America.

What does that mean in practice?

There is a window here where what was previously unimaginable is now possible, at least worth debate in.

With a mounting national course, decrying police brutality against black Americans,

there's a new call for deep structural reform of policing

across the country. Many are now demanding departments be defunded, dismantled or

outright about. After weeks of protests across the US, the movement against police racism is not fading away,

but it does have a new demand, not reform the cops, disband them.

On Sunday a majority of Minneapolis city council members pledged their commitment to defund the city's police department.

Minneapolis has pledged to dismantle its police department, while New York has announced that it will cut police funding.
