Summary

In this listener mail episode, Mike and Jay tackle a bunch of questions including whether we're spending the right amount of money on the right things for national defense, how to deal with a future in which machines are doing so many of the things people currently do, news outlets and columnists we don't agree with but respect and recommend, why Americans pay so much for health care when American healthcare outcomes seem to lag those of other rich countries, and why we're subsidizing the fossil fuel industry. Welcome to the politics, guys. I'm Michael Baranowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University.

0:24.5

Hey, Jay, you know, it's been a while since we have done a listener mail show, but that's what we're doing today.

0:30.0

So we've got a bunch of listener questions all queued up and ready to go.

0:34.7

So are you ready?

0:36.0

I'm ready.

0:36.7

All right, let's do it. We'll start with an

0:38.9

email from John, who writes in part, how about exploring military expenditures, comparing and

0:45.6

contrasting the view that we need a larger, say, Navy with those asking for a focus on better

0:50.9

body armor or preparing for a traditional war versus more of a series of

0:55.5

smaller conflicts. I want to learn what the evidence-based perspectives are from center right to

1:00.8

center left. My personal perspective is that every dollar spent on a gun is one not spent on our

1:07.2

most vulnerable citizens. But I have intelligent fact-driven friends whose values I largely respect who help me understand

1:14.0

that there are a lot of gray areas in the military expenditures question that I would love

1:18.4

hearing explored, not just to spend or not, but how to spend or where to spend operationally.

1:25.4

So, Jay, well, what are your thoughts on that, military spending,

1:29.7

how we should spend it, where we should spend it, or, you know, if we're spending too much of it?

1:34.2

Well, I'd say, you know, for the conservative answer, are we spending too much? Probably always

1:40.2

in that, you know, do we get the best deal on things or things overpriced? There was, you know, always there's been that history of, you know, do we get the best deal on things or things overpriced?

1:45.6

There was, you know, always, there's been that history of our military contracts overpriced.

1:50.9

And I think that's, that's part of just part of the beast that you deal with.

1:56.1

In large part, I would say, yeah, I think our military has become the more mobile, lighter sort of

2:05.5

force that it needs to be. You know, and I understand that you and I will differ on the wisdom
