During the spring and the summer, as head coach Dusty May built his first Michigan roster,

it felt like Trey Donaldson would have to play a major role at point guard.

When we got into the fall and then the start of the season, with things going well early,

that commonplace refrain from fan bases during good starts and college hoops,

boy, I hope we have enough playing time for all 10 plus players who

should be in the rotation.

Donaldson still felt like he had no equal or true replacement for his role outside of a few

small stints here and there.

Then when Michigan surged out to that 5-0 Big 10 start looked brilliance in Los Angeles

against USC and UCLA.

It looked like, yes, Trey Donaldson was going to be a key cog for Michigan.

Then, as Michigan shook off a couple of losses in January, Trey Donaldson,

Will Michigan passed Penn State with a personal 7-0 run.

And as Michigan stumbled down the stretch in the regular

season, yes, Trey had a rough patch. Others did, no doubt. But Donaldson is one of one on this

roster at the point guard position. No one can do what he does at his position, and it isn't

particularly close. Area 51, of course, has its own fascinatingly

unique abilities, and that's a two-man wrecking crew. That's the difference. And when they're

clicking, like they did on Saturday against Maryland, they can be very special and they can be

unlike anything in college basketball. But Donaldson is this team's point guard. He is this

team's only true point guard.
