Summary

What does it take to build something meaningful from nothing? Kelly talks with her cousin Kevin Corrigan, Notre Dame's head lacrosse coach, about the slow work of creating culture and character. Over four decades, Kevin has learned that the hardest part of leadership isn't the strategy or tactics—it's understanding that relationships matter more than being right, that asking "why" isn't defiance but engagement and that true strength comes from knowing when to be tough and when to listen. Through reflections on coaching, parenting and the art of helping people become their best selves, this conversation digs into how patience and authenticity can transform not just teams but lives. I'm Kelly Corrigan, and today we're kicking off a new series featuring great coaches.

We're starting with my cousin, Kevin Corrigan, who is the head lacrosse coach at Notre Dame.

He started with a minuscule budget

0:21.9

and a couple of friends, and he has built Notre Dame's program way out in the middle of the

championships in front of my very eyes. But what this conversation really covers is just how much work and care it takes to build

something from the ground up.

Kevin has been coaching college lacrosse for close to four decades, starting when there

was no internet, no cell phones, and a budget so tight that flying his team to the East Coast

seemed like an impossible dream. Now, as then, he builds his program on three pillars,

character, culture, and community. His teams don't just excel on the field. They've also achieved

1:08.7

the highest GPA of any team at Notre Dame and dedicate

1:12.7

countless hours to service in their community. Many people know this, but I want to share here that

Kevin is the son of Gene Corrigan, and Gene is my uncle. He is my dad, George's brother. They were

1:23.6

best friends, and consequently, I spent a lot of time with Kevin over the years,

1:27.9

watching him develop into a giant in college athletics.

1:32.1

Here is my conversation with coach Kevin Corrigan.
