One with the episode. Last time on Appalachian Mysteria, Diane


Fanning told us about the abduction and murder of Sophia Silva and the Lisk sisters. In this


episode, we meet the woman who took down the killer, as Darryl Rice was finally being


indicted, and Diane walks us through the life of serial killer Richard Mark Ivannis. From

At a news conference in Washington, D.C., attorney general John Ashcroft, joined by U.S.


attorney for the Western District of Virginia, John Brownlee, announced to the media that


Darryl David Rice had been charged with four counts of capital murder for the deaths


of Julie Williams and Lolly Winons. His address said, quote, today's murder indictment specifically


invokes a federal sentencing enhancement, enacted to ensure justice for victims of hate


crimes. If convicted of any of the charges in the indictment, Darryl David Rice could


face the death penalty. At this time, killing someone because of their sexual orientation


was not a hate crime, per se, and wouldn't be for two more years. For Rice, the federal
