Hello and welcome to Newsar from the BBC World Service coming to you live from our

studios in central London I'm Julian Marshall. There's been another outbreak of violence in the mainly Muslim region of Dagestan in southern

Russia.

You may recall that last October a mob storm the airport in the regional capital of

Makkala looking for Jews after the arrival of

plane from Tel Aviv. Now Makakakala has come under attack along with the city

of Darbent both of which sit on the Caspian Sea.

Gunmen have killed a priest and six police officers and set two churches and a

synagogue on fire.

Four of the gunman are reported to have been

shocked dead and the attacks are reported to be ongoing. I'm joined now by

Ulliana Pavlova, a freelance journalist based in the region.

Ulliana, let's just break it down and tell me first of all about what we know happened

in Mukachala.

So gunman opened fire at a synagogue an Orthodox church and a

police station in the Russia's region of the North Caucasus in Dagestan and we know that at least nine people were

killed as a result and 25 people injured. There seemed to be two seemingly

coordinated attacks in Derbent and Mahajkala.

Seven of the nine killed were law enforcement officers.

Then there was one Orthodox priest and a church security guard. It is important to point out that the gunman attacked

also synagogue and a church in Derbent and Derbent is a home to an ancient Jewish community.

So far, this is an ongoing situation.
