Hey friends, I'm Rachel Grohl and I'm your host for the Hearing Jesus podcast, where I help you to know God and to make him known.

0:11.7

Friends, before we dive into Genesis 27, I want to spend a little bit of time talking about something that you may have overlooked at the very end of Genesis 26. We're going to talk

0:23.0

about two women, the wives of Issa, Judith and Basmith. They actually were part of our women of the

0:29.4

Old Testament series, but as we go along, I've been dropping those episodes in where they make sense

0:35.9

in the Genesis story, because I think it helps us have context

0:39.4

around the women that we're talking about in these stories. And so today, before we move on,

0:44.5

we're going to stop and we're just going to learn a little bit about these two women and the

0:48.3

impact that those marriages made on Esau and the lasting impact it made on generations.

0:56.9

Today we are learning about two women that you may not recall. Their names are Judith and Basemath. And these were the wives of Issa.

1:03.5

We know and read and learn and hear a lot about Jacob and Leah and Rachel, but we sometimes

1:10.1

don't get that same understanding and

1:12.8

lesson from Esau. And there's a lot to impact there. So if you're just joining us, I just want to

1:18.0

remind you that we have journaling prompts that go with each episode. You can find those along

1:22.7

with ad-free episodes on our Patreon page. The links are in the show notes. And so today I'm reading from

1:28.0

Genesis chapter 26. I'm reading from the NIV. I'm starting at verse 17. It says,

1:33.4

So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Garra where he settled. Isaac reopened

1:38.4

the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up

1:43.0

after Abraham died. and he gave them

1:45.1

the same names his father had given them. Isaac's servants dug in the valley and discovered a well

1:49.2

of fresh water there, but the herders of Gerr quarreled with those of Isaac and said the water is

1:55.1

ours. So he named the well Essek because they disputed with him. Then they dug another well,

2:00.3

but they quarreled over that one also, so he named it Sitna. He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehobith, saying, now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land. From there, he went up to Birshiba. That night, the Lord appeared to him and said, I am the God of your father, Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you.
