Summary

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world.

Today, we bring you a bonus episode of What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring one key issue currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World. This episode features host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove.

Cosgrove is a leading voice in Conservative Judaism, who has served as head rabbi of New York’s Park Avenue Synagogue since 2008.

We speak about his soon-to-be-published book, "For Such a Time as This: On Being Jewish Today" (Harper Collins), which was written after the October 7 Hamas massacre of 1,200 and abduction of 251.

The book is a blend of memoir, Torah study and reflection on what it means to be a Jew in the Diaspora today even as Israel continues its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Using the October 7 onslaught as a touchstone, the book is roughly divided into past, present and future and examines the connection between American Jewry and Israel throughout the decades. Cosgrove addresses concerns such as a new generation of young Jewish Americans who are proud of their religious heritage, but repudiate the nationalism exhibited by the Jewish state.

So this week, we ask Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, what matters now.

Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly deep dive into one issue facing Israel and the Jewish world.

I'm Times of Israel Deputy editor Amanda Borschal Dan.

0:13.4

This week I'm joined by Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, a leading voice in conservative Judaism,

0:18.5

who has served as the head rabbi of New York's Park Avenue

0:22.0

Synagogue since 2008. Hi, Elliot. Thanks so much for joining me. It's great to be here.

0:27.7

Thank you, Amanda. We're here, of course, to speak about your new book for such a time as this,

0:32.8

which was written with the October 7th Hamas Massacre as its skeleton, shall we say, but not only about that.

0:39.9

The book, to me, is a real blend of memoir of Torah study, and it's almost an anthropological

0:46.6

or sociological reflection on what it means to be a Jew in the diaspora today, but not only

0:53.4

that as well. I want to mention that you and I

0:57.4

met about six years ago in the aftermath of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, and then I was

1:03.8

really impressed by your empathy, and in reading this book, it hit me again, and so I'll really

1:09.8

try to hold back the tears as we're talking. But I was so

1:13.3

moved in reading your book about how you're able to bring a lot of nuance from this moment and

1:20.8

from the many, many different sides of those affected by this moment. How did you get into the heads of so many different people?

1:30.7

Thank you, Amanda. And I remember that moment when we first connected in the wake of the Tree of Life

1:36.0

shootings, and I was there as a rabbi, you were there as a journalist, we were all there as

1:40.5

human beings who were shattered by the trauma of the tree of life shooting.

1:47.0

And that's really a way to frame some, not all, of what this book is about, because that was a

1:55.0

moment that we knew that anti-Semitism, animosity, violent acts against the Jewish community long preceded the horrors of October 7th.

2:08.3

So you had Pittsburgh, you had Poit.

2:11.3

You had countless incidents prior to this moment.
