| 0:00.0 | Hey everybody, it's day 17 on our 40-day tour through the Gospel of John. |
| 0:14.5 | Thanks so much for tuning in. We're up to John Chapter 8. So today in this story in John 8, |
| 0:20.3 | we are going to talk about sex and religion. Now that I have |
| 0:24.9 | your full attention, let's take a closer look at this famous story that's all about stones and |
| 0:30.1 | Jesus and a woman caught in the act of adultery and her self-righteous accusers. You might know the |
| 0:36.3 | story really well. You might be new to it. |
| 0:39.5 | You might be vaguely familiar with it, whatever it might be. I want to be your tour guide to give |
| 0:43.9 | you a deeper dive, to give you a sense of a little bit more of what's going on here in this story, |
| 0:48.5 | as it's told in John's Gospel in particular. Verse 3 says some scribes and Pharisees brought a woman who was caught in the sin of |

| 1:03.2 | Jesus is in the temple in the Holy City of Jerusalem. |
| 1:05.5 | There's a big crowd circled around him, listening to him teach. |
| 1:10.1 | It's a holy moment for them, and all of a sudden they all get |
| 1:13.4 | interrupted by the religious leaders who have the authority to do this. They run the temple, so they |
| 1:18.6 | bring this woman who's been caught in adultery to Jesus, and they're going to ask Jesus a question |
| 1:23.7 | to trap him. That's what John's Gospel says. They want to trap him so that they can get him |
| 1:28.5 | to say something they can use against him. And what they think they're going to get him to say is that |
| 1:33.1 | this woman should be set free. She should be forgiven. And they know they could use that against him, |
| 1:38.2 | because according to their laws of Moses, the laws of Moses that Jesus taught as a rabbi in the temple himself, |
| 1:45.0 | the laws of Moses said that she had to be condemned, that she could be stoned to death. |
| 1:49.8 | And if Jesus doesn't agree with them, then he's minimizing the laws of Moses. |
