Hey everybody, it's day 17 on our 40-day tour through the Gospel of John.

Thanks so much for tuning in. We're up to John Chapter 8. So today in this story in John 8,

we are going to talk about sex and religion. Now that I have

your full attention, let's take a closer look at this famous story that's all about stones and

Jesus and a woman caught in the act of adultery and her self-righteous accusers. You might know the

story really well. You might be new to it.

You might be vaguely familiar with it, whatever it might be. I want to be your tour guide to give

you a deeper dive, to give you a sense of a little bit more of what's going on here in this story,

as it's told in John's Gospel in particular. Verse 3 says some scribes and Pharisees brought a woman who was caught in the sin of

adultery to Jesus, and they put her in front of the whole crowd.

So, you know, let me set the scene here.

Jesus is in the temple in the Holy City of Jerusalem.

There's a big crowd circled around him, listening to him teach.

It's a holy moment for them, and all of a sudden they all get

interrupted by the religious leaders who have the authority to do this. They run the temple, so they

bring this woman who's been caught in adultery to Jesus, and they're going to ask Jesus a question

to trap him. That's what John's Gospel says. They want to trap him so that they can get him

to say something they can use against him. And what they think they're going to get him to say is that

this woman should be set free. She should be forgiven. And they know they could use that against him,

because according to their laws of Moses, the laws of Moses that Jesus taught as a rabbi in the temple himself,

the laws of Moses said that she had to be condemned, that she could be stoned to death.

And if Jesus doesn't agree with them, then he's minimizing the laws of Moses.
