0:40.4	a little bit of Sarah's story.
0:42.2	By this point she's at least 75 years old and she still has not had a child, even though
0:46.6	God had promised Abram a child when he visibly appeared to him.
0:50.2	So she does what many of us do when we feel like God is holding out on us.
0:53.8	She takes matters into her own hands.
0:56.2	In those days, servants were considered possessions which, let me pause here to say this very important
1:01.2	thing.
1:02.2	This is one of those things in scripture that is descriptive, not prescriptive.
1:05.9	It's telling us what is happening, not what should happen.
1:09.0	This is not condoning treating people like possessions.
1:11.9	But in that ancient culture, that's what was happening.
1:15.1	And basically anything a servant owned, the master owned, so the child of a servant
1:18.7	was considered the property of the master.
1:21.4	Sarah used that cultural norm as her logic behind making her servant have sex with her
