The idea when Steve Cohen bought the Mets was that he was going to buy them a title.

He was going to go out and do everything he had to do.

He was going to show Mets fans that he was willing to do anything he needed to do, right?

And he did a lot of things.

He paid a lot of money for a lot of players, and he paid a lot of money, especially for a lot of pitchers.

Remember the big money deals for Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, and Jacob de Grom was in

the midst of an extension, and that formula of building around big money aging veteran

pitchers didn't work.

And all the while,

he was paying some position players plenty as well.

Last year,

with the Mets were thought of as like kind of a plucky sort of underdog vibe.

They still had a crazy high payroll.

But they were fun because they had sold off a bunch of those pieces

and kind of rebuilt on the fly.

Now that David Stearns is there, the head of the Milwaukee Brewers for a good long while,

and that thing that was built in Milwaukee was Stearns and counsel.
