We had a doping culture.

Nobody even knew where the moral compass was anymore.

It was possible to beat the system,

and it was the game.

That sporting world that we want to put on that paragon of excellence

has actually been corrupted by the normal world.

I love bike racing. It's still the thing I love most. But there's a very fine line between love and hate.

I was never going to dope. I'm not going to become one of those dickheads.

Eventually I gave up and I thought I can't beat them or join them.

I was arrested and they found syringes in my apartment. I blamed it all in the sport.

Societal expectations can be overpowering.

You have to get to a point where the athletes do not want to take drugs.

That's talking about whole cultural changes.

After my first year off, I wanted to try and fix everything I'd done and the disappointments, and I wanted to go back

to my old values, started to feel like I had a good culture around me.

And then I did the tour of Spain.

When I won that, I had the press conference afterwards and I said to everybody, I did that clean.

That empowered me and it gave gravitas to what I felt was my responsibility, to educate people and how it happened and why it happened. You can't change things if you don't

understand them. Sport really does represent something that we've got to protect.
