Daily DLP: Mining the 49ers Defense
Welcome to the Detroit Lions Podcast Daily DLP. Today Ash Thompson goes over what might have been in play with Ben Johnson in terms of why he may not have wanted some of the head coaching jobs that were available in 2024. There are three main types of head coach openings, and Ash uses Detroit Lions coaching changes of yesteryear to illustrate them, as well as the openings that were available in 2024. He obviously does not know Ben Johnson, but not all head coaching opportunities are created equal, or fit the temperament of every coach.Detroit Lions Podcast Daily Lions Coverage

| 0:50.4 | I've kind of narrowed it down to three. |
| 0:52.0 | Like you could dial it into like seven or |
| 0:54.7 | eight, just various incarnations of these, but there's pretty much three types. |
| 1:01.6 | The first type is kind of a broken franchise with nothing in terms of assets, like just a bad |
| 1:06.9 | team that was bad and that is why they are changing everything. It's usually a complete |
| 1:11.8 | changeover. GMs gone. Coaching staff have been told they can all carte blanche look for other |
| 1:16.2 | jobs. This is Detroit 2009 where it's like, yeah, we are burning everything. Complete rebuild. |
| 1:25.9 | You don't have entrenched players that you're particularly |
| 1:27.7 | interested in keeping for the most part, like maybe one or two. I mean, 2009 Lions had Megatron |
| 1:32.3 | as an example. But the point is you don't have much to work with. You are starting |
| 1:38.3 | from scratch, like worse off than an expansion team in a lot of cases. And because the team has been so bad recently, |
