Welcome to the Daily Dad podcast. Today is a special episode. This is an interview I did a few months ago with the one and only Dr. Harvey Carp.

0:17.3

Dr. Harvey Carp is in some ways responsible for you even listening to this because we are big

0:23.3

fans of the snoo over at our house and we didn't have it for our first, for our second son.

0:29.2

We did have it and frankly gave us so many hours of sleep that I could not be a heartier

0:34.6

endorser of Dr. Harvey's, Dr. Harvey Carp's work. Many, many of my friends

0:40.8

are huge fans of his stuff. I saw him talk at Summit Series one year. Anyways, check out this

0:45.4

interview with the one and only Dr. Harvey Carp and check out his stuff about being the happiest

0:50.2

toddler on the block. Great stuff, great thinker. I think you're really going to like this episode. So Dr. Karp, it's amazing to talk to you. I thought we'd start with something you and I

1:06.2

had briefly touched on on the phone last time we talked, which is one of the things that I've found

1:12.3

so sort of humbling and inspiring, but and also just unusual about being a parent, and it's

1:20.2

this idea that in stoicism, it's just, it's this connection to this sense that you're a part of

1:25.8

something that has happened for as long as there

1:29.7

have been people and that we are descendants of an unbroken line of other fathers and mothers

1:38.3

or we wouldn't be here. And there's this sort of theme you see in the Stoics talking about all the

1:43.4

time, just that history is the same thing happening over and over again.

1:46.5

And I don't know, when I read ancient history, I'm just struck always by, you know, it's like Socrates talking about, you know, troubles at home.

1:54.2

And like the theme of trying to be good at this really hard thing is maybe the most human thing that there is.

2:03.6

Yeah, it's beautifully put, Ryan.

2:06.6

I think that you don't even realize that until you have a child.

2:11.6

It's very kind of abstract for people in our culture today because unlike every other generation of humanity in history and prehistory up until 100 years ago, you would have spent a lot of time with little kids.

2:28.3

You would have helped raise your siblings and been with your cousins and run around in the play yard and big kids take care of the little kids.

2:36.0

And you just intuitively learn this stuff.
