Oh yeah, and sometimes featuring Raph, ah, Hollywood, Granger. Hey everyone, welcome to another episode of the D6 Generation.

Thought this time I'd go back and do a little bit of mulling mechanics.

0:49.6

I'm not sure we've done a mulling mechanics episode in a while.

0:53.3

And I thought today I might share with you a

0:55.5

little bit some of my thoughts on asymmetric gameplay, you know, games that have different

1:01.8

play styles, abilities, powers, even mechanics offer different players in the game. And I thought

1:09.4

I kind of go through some of these historically, the ones I've enjoyed and haven't enjoyed, but also some of the things I think about when I think about asymmetric gameplay. It's kind of a fun little thought exercise here for maybe when you're next, looking at your next game. So let's define asymmetric gameplay first a little bit. And the reason this is top of mind for me before I I get into the definitions, is Kit and I, my youngest daughter, who's getting ready to go off to college right now. So, man, time flies. But Kit and I'm playing a lot of games since her older sister's been away at college, and she and I've been spending a lot of time to gaming together. And I just can't recommend enough how much fun it is to play games to your kids.

And we've been playing a lot of games with different rules for different factions and different player rules.

1:51.3

And it's just been really interesting to me to see how lately I think a lot of interesting

1:55.5

games are really doing some crazy stuff with asymmetric play.

1:58.3

And so it just became top of mind for me.

2:01.6

And I thought it's serious on my thoughts. So what do we mean by, or what do I mean when I say asymmetric gameplay,

2:07.7

right? And the thing I think about is basically it means that, um, the players have different, um,

2:15.7

play styles, play types, even sometimes play rules than each other. Right. So, for example,

2:21.9

a game like chess is not an asymmetric game, meaning both sides have the exact same

2:27.5

abilities. The only slight bit of asymmetry is that white gets to go first by the rules of the game,

2:33.4

right? So one side always gets the first move, but other than that, everything in the game is identical. And more modern games like this, too, the Duke is another example of this. Well, the Duke is an interesting example from our friends at Catalyst Game Labs. The Duke is a game where you pull tiles out of a bag, right? And you play these tiles onto a chess or checker-like

2:52.2

board. Um, and then these tiles, each are different movement styles. Now, in the core game of the

2:56.7

Duke, both players' bags are filled with the same tiles. So the game may progress asymmetrically,
