0:00.0 | For many years now, Russ and Craig have had many wide-ranging conversations with folks from all over the gaming world. |

0:33.9 | Hey, so, well, it's fall, And that means lots of donuts and other things with cinnamon in them. Did you notice that? Pumpkin, pumpkin, a lot of apple. The apple pie is really good. It is. It is. It is. It is all American, too. It is good. So settle in. Have yourself up. What are you having there? You're not having a coffee. |
0:55.0 | No, I like, I will have coffee, but I like the unsweetened iced tea. |
0:58.7 | And I also do like the pumpkin muffin. |

1:04.9 | This is just an ice tea. |
1:06.1 | Yeah. |
1:06.6 | Okay. |
1:07.0 | Well, so settle back. And I want to talk a little bit, Ross, about all of this role playing that you've been doing with your kids because it sounds awesome. And we've been getting a lot of questions. It's like a whole new gaming group, really. It's kind of exciting. Yeah. Yeah, it's been great. So where should it begin? Well, let's start first. I mean, you eased them in. I know that. And then you slammed them with both feet with 5E very recently. |
1:32.8 | So let's lead up with what, like, how do you run? |
1:38.6 | Like, I mean, I know a lot of people listen and they're like, you know, obviously it's not going to be lots of stats and lots of, you know, lots of, well, you know, that action takes point five seconds. So you, but, you know, I mean, so what, what do you focus on when you're really, when you're doing it with kids? Well, it's funny. So the very first game I started with was something called, I think I mentioned on the show before, a fairy's tail. |
1:46.0 | And you can still get this game on Drive-Thru RPG. |
1:48.3 | So if you're interested in it, The very first game I started with was something called, I think I mentioned on the show before, a fairy's tail. |
2:01.9 | And you can still get this game on Drive-Thru RPG. So if you're interested in it, it is available there as a PDF. It's a small amount of money, like $10 something. And what I liked about this game, and I started first role playing with them when they were like six and seven. And the reason I thought it might work was that they really like, we would just sit around and tell stories sometimes, you know? And I think Rafe talked about this when his kids were young too. Like he actually wrote a short book based on the stories. And I realize you're telling stories. Well, RPGs are just collaborative storytelling, right? So why not try one with them? And so when I saw this, I looked for a really simple one, and a fairy tale is very simple. You only have three stats. And basically, one of them is spirit. And you basically just roll dice and home for successes. So it's success-based things. So I might say, you need, you know, you see a river and how do you want to cross it? And they're saying, I want to try to lift the log. And he said, the log is very heavy, so you need three successes know, you see a river and how do you want to cross it? |
2:51.0 | And they're saying, I want to try to lift the log. |
2:52.6 | And he said, the log is very heavy. So you need three successes. And you make your strength check, which tells them any dice you roll and look for success. So there's only three stats. And you can put your spirit into the kind of force re-rolls. And then there's a magic ability and kind of craft that into whatever you want. So if the kids want to do that, they can. |
2:48.8 | But the first thing, I think the most important thing, and I think it's sometimes very tempting to just skip the character creation or give your kids a pregenerated character. Uh-huh. Yeah. No circumstances, do that. Oh, okay. I found that by starting out and just make the very first session, the only thing you're going to accomplish in the first hour, two-hour session, and keep it short, if you get too-hour session, is just create your character. And even this fairy game, right? So you pick your, you know, you pick in your race, you're kind of fairy, and you're picking your, you're basically picking your gender, the kind of fairy you are, and a couple points in your stats, and that's it. But I had them really think about it. I had them, like, draw a picture of their fairy. I had them write down, well, when they were really young, they were to write down and just tell me a little story about their character. And they really got into it. They really got into who their character was even before playing it. And that gave them a lot of ownership into watching the character. And the very first thing they did when they met their cousins who also played with them was ask and interact and really want to find out about their story too. So you really make it about that. You think the kids are going to want to go off on this grand adventure and they do. But really that's important and that gets them into the game yeah and then for the so it's |
