Summary

On an icy October night in 1984, a young, overworked pilot took off from Edmonton, Alberta, in a small commuter plane with nine passengers aboard, including a politician, a cop and his prisoner. Battling thick cloud cover and the accumulation of ice on the aircraft, the pilot misjudged his descent. Moments later, the plane collided with a hillside in the remote Canadian wilderness.

Pilot Eric Vogel grips the yoke with his sweaty hands and stares out the windshield of his small plane.

0:24.7

He can't see a thing. He's flying through a cloud bank so thick and dark he can barely see the lights on his wingtips.

0:33.1

It's October 19th, 1984, just after 8 p.m.

0:39.3

Eric is flying nine passengers from Edmonton, Alberta, to the northern Canadian town of High Prairie, an hour's flight away.

0:47.3

He left 40 minutes ago, so it should almost be time to start his descent.

0:52.3

Up north in remote areas, he has to rely on a

0:56.2

navigation technique called Dead Reckoning that involves doing complex math to estimate the plane's track.

1:02.3

A compass-like instrument called an automatic direction finder, or ADF, helps him locate radio

1:09.3

ground transmitters known as beacons to chart his position along

1:13.2

the way. Right now, he has his ADF tuned to a beacon near the town of Swan Hills, about two-thirds

1:20.1

of the way. Once he passes it, a needle will swing around, and then he'll home in on the high

1:26.1

prairie beacon. But Eric is stiff with worry.

1:30.1

The tiny airport in High Prairie has no control tower to help guide him in, so the only way

1:36.2

for him to land there is to try for a visual approach. But it won't be easy. The most recent

1:42.3

weather report said the cloud ceiling is only 900 feet above the

1:45.9

ground. Technically, it's against the rules for him to conduct a visual approach under a thousand

1:51.0

foot ceiling. But he's just 24 and under pressure from his boss to get to his destinations, even if it

1:58.1

means pushing the weather. Moments later, the needle of his ADF swings around.

2:04.4

He takes a deep breath, pushes the yoke forward, and starts descending.

2:08.8

Then radios High Prairie for an update on the cloud cover.
