My parents immigrated from Egypt, where I'd spend many of my childhood summers, getting

on a plane just after school ended in June and coming back right before it started in late

August.

In those 15 hours, I would travel different worlds apart.

The sights, the sounds, the smells, couldn't be more different in the working class neighborhood

in Egypt than in my sleepy 90s era suburb of Detroit.

Health differed too.

A lot.

Egyptian life expectancy lags the US by nearly a decade.

And that's because of infectious diseases.

Things like tuberculosis, typhoid, and yellow fever.

Egypt is a middle-income country.

One of many countries in the world where deaths to infectious diseases are commonplace.

Thankfully, before COVID-19 at least, few of us have experienced the loss of somebody

because of an infectious disease.
