Summary

When we talk about narcissism, we talk about the two main categories of narcissists - overt and covert narcissists. You know that person who walks into the room, has a sense of grandiosity and commands the attention? That’s an overt narcissist. But today I want to focus on the other type, the covert narcissist, and why I believe it’s the most dangerous type of narcissists.

What You Will Learn In This Episode:

  • Why covert narcissists are difficult to recognise
  • How to spot passive aggressive behaviour
  • Self-criticism or shyness as possible traits of a covert narcissist
  • The false sense of self and the childhood wounds of narcissists
  • Why narcissists never seek a therapist
  • Envy, jealousy and false empathy
  • How covert narcissists present themselves as victims
  • Focusing on yourself as the first step in healing from narcissistic abuse

So let me know - do you have a covert narcissist in your life? Can you relate to anything that I've covered in this episode?

So when we talk about narcissism, I tend to talk to people about really two categories of narcissism. There are lots more than that,

0:40.2

but really to help people understand, I like to keep it really, really simple because otherwise

0:44.5

everyone feels like they want to get a PhD in narcissistic abuse. I know that's certainly what I feel

0:49.4

like I have, but I'm probably way down the track of where you are right now. And I'm able to read about it. It's not

0:55.3

triggering. And in fact, I'm one of those geeky people that loves to learn even more about that.

1:00.8

But it doesn't trigger me. And this is why it's really, really important for you in your journey

1:04.9

of healing after the trauma of narcissistic abuse, that you seek out people that you can relate to, that you can understand,

1:12.3

that have been where you are so that you can just literally focus on that person.

1:17.2

And of course, I would love to be that person for you because I've been where you are.

1:21.3

I like to think I'm educated enough to help you on all of this on not just a real empathic

1:26.7

personal level, but on a deeply

1:28.5

neuroscience-based level, really understanding the trauma, really understanding what is

1:33.5

happening in our body as well. So today I want to talk to you about really the two main

1:38.5

types of narcissistic, but really focus on one of those. Now, narcissism, like I say, can be categorized predominantly into two

1:47.2

things. We have overt narcissists and covert narcissist. Now, the overt narcissist is probably the one

1:55.9

most people would associate with being a narcissist. You know, that person who might walk into the room would have that

2:02.4

sense of grandiosity, almost commanding that attention, almost looking like, oh, gosh, don't they

2:08.5

love themselves? And sadly, in some respects, that's where it's quite damaging, because that's
