Hey guys, welcome to Things Policie. This is cops in the news where we talk about law enforcement news stories as reported to us by the always reliable trustworthy and honest news media.

0:17.0

My co-host is the handsome prince, prince and king of police backgrounds. He's a host at police.

0:24.0

Police background police applicant by cast and he's the owner of a police background dot net. I can't get it right. This is a second try guys. Oh my goodness. You can hear us now. Can you can hear me?

0:37.0

I can hear you. Yeah, so we tried the first time and then everything was melting down and I told Ken I checked my fan on my computer was like going crazy and I looked at the temperature was almost 200 degrees, which is way too hot.

0:52.0

So I'm too hot. We're back. Hopefully we didn't lose everybody. No, they're climbing back on board. So how are you doing now that you can hear me? I'm good. I can hear you good because I I have a brain hemorrhage from your the audio last time, but now I feel good. You're such a good sport. You're like, uh, no, I can just we can just I'll I'll build a make it out.

1:16.0

I'll read this big long question. You're like, what? I'll just read your lips. And I'll tell everybody what you said. Alex is here. Alex Ketlin is here. Yeah, let's atrick O'Donnell. There we go. So now I got my fancy screen. We can both enjoy it now. Yeah, this way I can actually see their faces, their mugs. Patrick O'Donnell looks like he looks like a dog. I don't know. Is it just me? Oh, I can tell you. I know for a fact. He's not a dog. He's an actual human man. He's been on the podcast. Uh, don't get good. He did cops in the news.

1:46.0

So he's, uh, he's a, he's a different show. He's legit. He's a legit man. Where's JJ? JJ? You have to come back. He's a one and done for him. There's Kurt. Right. Kurt Geiss. He's here. Another guest to the show. Sir, welcome. Good to see you. So Ken, like I was saying, before we had our debacle, um, I was going to read you a question from a fan of the show. Uh, good kid. And he's got, um,

2:16.0

uh, predicament. He wants, he'd like us to comment on. So let me run this by you. Now that, um, hopefully you build a,

2:23.0

understand me. He says, uh, what's going on, Steve? I had a question for you that I wanted to get an opinion on from the perspective of an LEO.

2:30.8

So I live in California and you're in mass. Both states have made caring automatic and out the front type knives illegal switch blades,

2:38.1

jerk knives, stuff like that. Uh, if you were out in public on patrol and you saw someone using automatic knife for legitimate purpose,

2:44.7

like opening boxes or something like that. Would you say anything? Or even if you were able to recognize the clip of a well-known automatic knife brand in someone's pocket, a lot of cops, um, do carry these, like micro techs and stuff.

2:57.5

So they might recognize it. Um, I asked because I may or may not have started carrying a micro tech OTF on the daily, a couple of weeks back.

3:06.6

And I'm curious how a reasonable cop would react. Uh, uh, obviously you can't speak for any other officers, but I'm curious.

3:13.7

So what I would say from my perspective, um, I don't have a big hard on for automatic knives. I think, I mean, in the mass law, they were outlawed a long time ago, because there was actually knives that would shoot a blade, like out, like, would, you know, um, and there was all kinds of stuff people were coming up with.

3:31.7

The automatic knives. Now what's the difference between that in an assisted blade? You know what I mean? Like there's really not, but in mass, I believe it's a felony.

3:39.4

And the only time I've ever charged it was we had a domestic arrest and I, and I padded the guy down and he had a switch blade.

3:48.3

And that just added to my case. It just added because he was already, we're already resting for domestic abuse, um, beaten his girlfriend up. And now he has, uh, you know, uh, per se dangerous weapon on him. So I charge him. But for me, Ken, like, if I saw, like, if I'm on patrol and I see the UPS man take out like a little three inch blade and open a box or whatever.

4:08.8

I'm not really caring, but it is a felony and there are cups that do care. And they will grant that. What do you think?

4:18.8

I think that if I saw the UPS guy with one, uh, I'd, I'd put at a help call first off. And then I would do a felony takedown. And then knee to the back, you know, the whole thing. Yeah.

4:31.3

Personally, I probably wouldn't care. I mean, you have to be, you have to be, you have to be kind of logical about it. It's, it's, we learned in the police academy, uh, that you enforce the law by the spirit of the law, not the later of the law.

4:43.6

Given the fact that it's a felony, I think that, you know, there's a lot of felonies that, that people get arrested for. And then they're let out five minutes later. So, especially now we were. Yeah.
