One of the most horrifying things that happened to me as a psychotherapist was when I was helping a particular married couple.

Colleague of mine was counseling the wife, and I was counseling the husband.

He was distressed for many reasons, and I eventually learned that he had a gun.

I made a deal with him to get rid of it.

His wife even confirmed that he had done so. He slowly began to feel better and eventually terminated our therapy sessions which

concerned me terribly. About three months later in front of his wife he pulled

out a new small caliber pistol and shot himself.

Sadly, what looks like a person getting better can actually be someone who has put a suicide plan into place.

Once they've made the decision, they often appear to be better and

calmer because their plan erases the chaos in their minds.

Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15 to 29 year olds worldwide,

according to the World Health Organization. The most common cause of suicide is an underlying mental disorder,

followed by alcoholism and drug use as the second and third most common causes.

There are often warning signs, but people who don't clearly show signs can still

kill themselves too. And people who show most of the signs may not. So really, there is no

cut and dry signal, but there are indications which can serve as a warning.
